I also love dressing up. So I decided to put together a hat-making session so we could design gorgeous hats to wear to Kentucky Derby Day.
After a trip to the dollar store and gathering all our craft supplies, we threw it all out on the counter and everyone went to work designing, cutting, gluing, and hat-making.
I made a pink hat for myself and a purple butterfly hat for my niece, Chloe.
On the day of the race, we doned our fancy dresses to match our hats, snapped a quick picture and headed to watch the horses!
The stands were crowded, but we found a bench and set up with our information booklets and m&m's and prepared to place our candy bets.
It was fun to admire all the lovely and crazy hats while also snapping pictures of our own.
Strategizing on which horse would win and admiring the beautiful, sleek animals filled our afternoon. Of course, the babies got a little restless, but food and naps helped.
In the middle of the live-action races, the Kentucky Derby Race aired and we cheered and screamed for our chosen horse to win. It was actually a historic race to watch as the first place horse ended up being disqualified and second place took the winning status for the first time ever. We argued about the validity of it all and then returned back to our local horse races, root beer floats, popcorn, and fries. It was a grand ol' time.
Horses, sunshine, m&m's, family, dressing up, and fun. One of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday afternoon.
